TamControl (an IMO distributor) in Finland was approached by a local manufacturing company called Fann Ympäristötekniikka Oy who was sourcing components for their Roslagen vacuum toilet system.
Finland is sparsely populated, with just over 85% of the population living in cities. As such, rural areas can frequently be off-grid in terms of waste-water (sewage) provision as well as a clean water supply, leading to the requirement for a hygenic and suitable stand-alone toilet.
The operating principle of the toilet system was based on vacuum technology. The waste water flows into an enclosed tank with the help of air sucked into the sewer pipe through the toilet seat, in exactly the same way as toilets found on aeroplanes. The clean water doesn’t need to be plumbed in to a mains water supply, as it can be pumped in from a small (20-50 litre) water tank. This means that the Roslagen vacuum toilet can be effectively used in locations where there is no sewage system or running water. It goes without saying that these benefits for those living off-grid are huge. The Roslagen vacuum toilet also has some serious eco credentials, as only a very small amount of water is required for each flush, typically 0.5 litres, which compared to standard mains plumbed toilets is a significant reduction in water waste. After flushing, a small amount of water is sprayed into the bowl to create a water lock.
The Roslagen vacuum toilet is also exceptionally easy to install, as well as to use. It offers three different flushing functions that can be selected via the touch screen of the iView Advanced HMI that is visible behind the main toilet seat, as well as being able to see important information such as tank levels. It even has an alarm when the waste tank is full.
The control solution provided by TamControl also included the iSmart Intelligent Relay, MPS modular PSU, ETS slimline relay, Push-Fit DIN Rail Terminals, all mounted on DIN Rail within an IMO ABS Enclosure.
